Kyoka Ubud

Kyoka is a Japanese restaurant in the heart of Ubud, Bali. As a new opening, they needed a brand identity built from scratch — one that could grow with the business. The relationship developed over time, starting with a photography-led digital presence and evolving into a full suite of brand touchpoints including bespoke hand-drawn illustrations, menus, packaging and signage.

Client: Kyoka Japanese Restaurant

Location: Ubud, Bali
Platform: WordPress

The challenge

  • No existing brand, so everything needed to be created from scratch

  • The restaurant needed to feel distinctive and memorable in a competitive Ubud dining scene

  • The identity had to work across digital and print, from the website to menus, packaging and signage

  • The look needed to feel modern, with a genuine nod to Japanese art and culture

  • The website needed to capture the restaurant's personality and turn visitors into bookings

The approach and solution

The brand started where most people first encounter Kyoka: online. The initial direction was clean and contemporary, led by photography of beautifully presented food and cocktails, with modern Japanese patterns giving the identity structure and character.

As the restaurant grew and the physical touchpoints developed, the brand evolved with it. Bespoke hand-drawn illustrations became the centrepiece of the next chapter, including cocktails served beneath a traditional Japanese demon mask with smoke curling from its nose, alongside sushi and ramen. They gave Kyoka a richer, more distinctive visual language that carried consistently through the menus, packaging and signage.

A brand that grew with the business
The identity developed in stages, from a photography-led launch to a fully illustrated look, without losing consistency along the way.

Bespoke hand-drawn illustrations
Original artwork of Kyoka's signature cocktails and dishes gave the brand a distinctive look no template could replicate.

Consistent across every touchpoint
Menus, packaging and signage share the same visual language as the website, so the experience feels cohesive from first impression to last.

A website with personality
The WordPress site reflects the brand's atmosphere and is easy to navigate, guiding visitors towards booking a table.

The outcome

Kyoka now has a cohesive brand identity across both digital and physical touchpoints, and the hand-drawn illustrations give the restaurant a visual presence that stands out in Ubud. The brand has proved durable enough to grow with the business, and I still manage and update the website today.
